Where can I find the manufacturer's model name for my mobile/manufactured home?
Wednesday, June 26, 2019
The model name/number is on the data plate inside the home. A HUD data plate has been required to be placed inside every mobile home manufactured since July, 1976, and it is usually located on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door, behind the door over the electrical panel, or on the wall of a closet.
There is a line near the top of the data plate identified as for “Manufacturer’s Serial Number and Model Unit Designation.” The model name is listed after the serial number, separated by a space or dash. The data plate shown above is an example of one with a model name that is a combination of letters and numbers. But it could also just be a name, like “SueAnn,” or a combination of name and numbers like “Palm Bay 6233” shown below.
Sometimes the manufacturer can provide the model name for a newer home based on the serial number, if the data plate is missing or you can’t find it. The model name may also be found on the mobile home registration, purchase receipts, or the loan financing papers.
- The serial number can also be found on the data plate if it is still with the home. The data plate is an 8 1/2 x 11 inch document mounted inside your home, with several maps of the United States on it. The Data Plate is affixed in a permanent manner near the main electrical panel or other readily accessible and visible location.

- On some units, the serial number is the VIN number. According to Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the serial number identifies the mobile home maker and state of manufacture. Each section (eight foot minimum width) of a mobile home has its own VIN.
